iPod zombies

Beware, iPod zombie cyclists are on the rise – Times Online

WATCH out for the iPod zombies. Cyclists distracted by music blaring in their ears have become the latest menace on Britain’s roads.

The fashion for cyclists to wear earphones on crowded city streets is being held partly responsible for the recent upsurge in cycling injuries and deaths, as well as collisions with pedestrians.

Road safety groups are alarmed at the practice and this weekend Edmund King, the president of the AA, called on the Department for Transport (DfT) to launch a campaign warning cyclists of the risk. The number of urban cyclists has grown so sharply that safety groups say the risky behaviour of a minority can cause serious problems.

The latest DfT figures show that 820 cyclists were killed or seriously injured in the three months to June, a 19% rise on the same period in 2008. It is not known how many of these cases were caused by people listening to music because the DfT and the police do not record the information.

Entrepreneurs in rural China are pulling themselves out of poverty with the help of a new micro-credit Web site formed five months ago by two 25-year-olds in the Bay Area.

Casey Wilson of Oakland and Courtney McColgan of Menlo Park founded Wokai.org, modeled after the popular Kiva.org microfinance site. Donors choose from a list of borrowers online and make tiny donations. They can follow their money through online photos and updates of the person they fund.

Wilson and McColgan met in a postgraduate Chinese language program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, realized they shared the same interests, and came up with Wokai – which means “I start” – during a St. Patrick’s Day party in 2007.

They raised $50,000 from friends and family, amassed an army of volunteers and, through word of mouth, cocktail parties and social networking, opened Wokai chapters in Seattle, New York and San Francisco.

Since they launched their site in November, 275 Wokai donors have donated $25,000 to 60 rural Chinese entrepreneurs, helping them open noodle stands, duck hatcheries and grain stores.

Wokai is catching on fast in San Francisco, with its large Asian population, tech-savvy culture and philanthropic spirit, said Alice Wu, who leads 45 volunteers and 12 interns for Wokai’s San Francisco chapter. Volunteers help with the business plan, Web site design, publicity and online marketing.

Most of Wokai’s donors are in their 20s, have some family or business connection to China, and work in charity or finance, Wilson said.

The Wokai Web site also features pictures and short stories from the people who donate. Casey, whose father donated and then posted a note on Wokai saying how proud he was of his daughter, is now working fulltime to help keep Wokai running.

“It feels like the Obama effect,” Wilson said. “People are following his lead to get involved, and word is spreading through Facebook and Twitter and YouTube.”

Wilson recently gave a speech at Google, the video was posted on a Chinese blog, it went to YouTube, and now a New Yorker magazine writer is following her for a possible story.

“The biggest thing I have to explain when I talk to groups is that China needs help,” Wilson said. “People think it’s a wealthy superpower, and it is growing rapidly, but not in the rural areas where there are 737 million people living on $1.50 a day. They can’t afford to send their kids to school, so there’s little hope of eliminating poverty in their families.”

Wu gives at least $5 to everyone who requests a loan on Wokai. At any given time, there are 15 loan requests on the site. Wilson and McColgan keep the requests to a manageable number so that each person has a better shot at getting their entire loan funded.

“It’s an easy pitch for me,” Wu said. “I never liked the pure nonprofit mind-set where the charity comes in and rescues you – I’m a fan of microfinance where each side puts in a little work.”

When Wilson gave a donation to help a mother in China open a noodle stand, she printed up T-shirts for San Francisco Wokai volunteers that read, “Help Mrs. Wei Open a Noodle Stand.”

The pitch worked. Now Mrs. Wei is feeding her family.

UPDATE 9.09am: THE Secret Service is investigating how two aspiring reality TV stars got into a White House state dinner, bypassing layers of security.

The Secret Service is “conducting a comprehensive review of the incident” at the gala dinner in honour of visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh late Tuesday, Special Agent Edwin Donovan told AFP.

Tareq and Michaele Salahi boasted on their joint Facebook page about how they were “honoured to be at the White House for the state dinner in honour of India with President Obama and our First Lady!”

Sporting a black dinner jacket and a flowing red and gold sari, the couple posted photos posing with Vice President Joe Biden, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel — who they mistakenly identified as “Ron Emanuel” — and even three uniformed marines.

Canadian man busted for marijuana
TAICHUNG, Taiwan — A Canadian man was arrested yesterday for drug-trafficking and growing marijuana in his residence in Taichung.

The man, identified only as Steven, was caught by the police at his lodging with several marijuana plants in it. The police also ferreted out 57 grams of the drugs and more than 3500 hemp seeds.

The law enforcement found out that the seeds were sent by his relatives and friends from overseas and sometimes carried by himself when entering Taiwan. Steven used special equipment to grow the cannabis including plates, potting soil and lighting devices and sold his harvest through drug trafficking channel to make profits.

According to police’s investigation, Steven has two jobs during the day including giving lectures at a golf club and teaching English in a school.

Not allowed to hang your laundry outside?

US residents are battling with property owners and neighbors for the right to hang their laundry outdoors. It’s odd that the country where people put most importance on “human rights” fusses over such small things that people here take for granted, like discussing if you can be naked in your own home.

Debate Follows Bills to Remove Clotheslines Bans – NYTimes.com

CANTON, Ohio — After taking a class that covered global warming last year, Jill Saylor decided to save energy by drying her laundry on a clothesline at her mobile home.

Mary Lou Sayer, who uses her dryer sparingly, hanging wet laundry indoors at her condominium in Concord, N.H.

“I figured trailer parks were the one place left where hanging your laundry was actually still allowed,” she said, standing in front of her tidy yellow mobile home on an impeccably manicured lawn.

But she was wrong. Like the majority of the 60 million people who now live in the country’s roughly 300,000 private communities, Ms. Saylor was forbidden to dry her laundry outside because many people viewed it as an eyesore, not unlike storing junk cars in driveways, and a marker of poverty that lowers property values.

High tech island… not

I used to think the title “high-tech island” meant that Taiwan was advanced in every aspect, but I doubt this is accurate now that I’m aware of how much we’ve fallen behind in educational technology, how unpopular  Lixus is, how unpopular Fiber-optic communication is, etc. Just because Taiwan manufactures computers doesn’t mean it’s high tech. The title is an exaggeration.

Study: Same hormone evokes both love and envy
By JUDY SIEGEL-ITZKOVICH

As our lives all too often show, love and envy are two sides of the same coin. An Israeli scientist has now proven that they are two sides of the same hormone as well.

Dr. Simone Shamay-Tsoory, who conducted her research at the University of Haifa, has discovered that the same mammalian hormone involved in labor, delivery, lactation and love can also evoke negative behaviors such as jealousy and gloating.

Oxytocin is best known as the “love hormone” for its ability to trigger empathy, generosity and trust. But after testing 56 volunteers, Shamay-Tsoory found that there was a fine line between love and jealousy – and that oxytocin could also bring out antisocial behaviors. Her study was published in the latest issue of Biological Psychiatry.

“Subsequent to these findings, we assume that the hormone is an overall trigger for social sentiments. When the person’s association is positive, oxytocin bolsters pro-social behaviors; when the association is negative, the hormone increases negative sentiments,” she explained.

Previous studies have shown that the hormone has a positive effect on positive feelings. It is released in the body naturally during childbirth and when engaging in sexual intercourse. Participants in an experiment who inhaled the synthetic form of the hormone displayed higher levels of altruistic feelings, and it is suggested that it plays an important role in the formation of relationships between people.

However, in earlier studies carried out with rodents, it was found that the hormone was also related to higher levels of aggression. Therefore, it was decided to examine whether the hormone also affected negative social sentiments. In the new study, done on humans, half of the participants inhaled the synthetic form of the hormone in the first session and were given a neutral placebo in the second session; the others were given a placebo in the first session and oxytocin in the second session.

After the drug was inhaled, each participant was asked to play a game of luck along with another competitor, who was in fact – and without their knowledge – a computer. Each of the participants was asked to choose one of three doors and was awarded the sum of money hidden behind that door. Sometimes the participant gained less money than the other player, and sometimes more, creating conditions in which a person might develop feelings of envy and gloating.

The findings showed that those who had inhaled oxytocin displayed higher levels of envy when the opponent won more money and of gloating when they were ahead. As soon as the game was over, no differences between the participants were evident with regard to these sentiments. This indicated that the negative feelings were empowered only in the course of the game itself.

“Following the earlier results of experiments with oxytocin, we began to examine the possible use of the hormone as a medication for various disorders, such as autism.
